Frances Theodora Parsons (1861-1952)
How to Know the Ferns: a Guide to the Names, Haunts, and Habits of Our Common Ferns
New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1909

Pale green, gold, and black on light green cloth. Another variant (published 1899) exists in yellow-green and gold on light brown cloth.

Armstrong uses a simple color scheme to great effect on a cover unlike anything else in this exhibit. Armstrong’s amateur botanist skills are on display in this cover, highlighting her attention to detail as she depicts the common Ebony Spleenwort in five vertical fronds.

Library copy a gift of Mrs. Frederic F. de Rham.
