Li’l’ Gal

Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906)
Li’l’ Gal
New York: Dodd, Mead and Co., 1904

Cream, orange, pale green, and gold on yellowish tan or white cloth.

Another gorgeous design for a Dunbar publication. Armstrong consistently creates vivid and balanced bindings. The symmetrical bouquets incorporate stylized, yet familiar flowers, the orange in the flowers repeating in the ribbon wrapped around each bouquet. The book is illustrated with photographs by Leigh Richmond Miner and with decorations by Margaret Armstrong. Armstrong ties the cover design into the text itself by incorporating decorations and borders in pale orange throughout.
