I’m not reading it now, and it’s not a travel book, but I read it when I was a young teen, loved it, and immediately lobbied my family about a summer cross-country road trip. We took that trip in 1958. Seeing the U.S. before interstates, SUVs, Comfort Inns etc. was learning about a country foreign to a girl from Brooklyn. It changed my life—and thus, so did Kerouac.
