Candle-Lightin' Time

Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906)
Candle-Lightin’ Time
New York: Dodd Mead and Co., 1901

Brown, pale yellow, dark green, and gold on light green cloth. Another variant exists in maroon, white, dark green and gold stamping on green cloth.

Candle-Lightin’ Time is a stunning cover in the Library’s collection. Armstrong incorporates symmetrical and repeating patterns, balancing the design. Her choice of colors creates a vivid scene on the binding, evoking a moonscape over a field. Inside this volume, readers will find a decorated half-title and title page, with decorations and borders in pale green and black. Candle-Lightin’ Time is illustrated with photographs by the Hampton Institute Camera Club, with decorations by Armstrong.
