John K. Beekman, a merchant and theater owner, was born on April 29, 1768. He was a co-owner with John Jacob Astor of the Park Theatre, which they purchased in 1806 (Madsen 219).
Beekman's father was Library member James Beekman and his mother was Jane Keteltas Beekman. His uncles were Library members William Beekman and Gerard W. Beekman, Sr., and his cousin was Library member Catherine Cox. He was the brother of Library members James Beekman, Jr., Gerard W. Beekman, Jr., Abraham K. Beekman, and William Beekman. He married Mary Elizabeth Goad Bedlow in 1792 (Aitken 121).
Beekman was known as "Theater Jack" for his love of the theater. He and Astor owned the Park Theatre for fourteen years when it was destroyed by a fire on May 25, 1820 (The Magazine of HIstory 72). It was reopened in September 1821 (Lamb and Harrison 333-334).
Beekman died on December 8, 1843.
