Catharine Cox was born on December 13, 1754. Her parents were Gerard W. Beekman, Sr. and Mary Duyckinck. Her uncles were Library members James Beekman and William Beekman, and her cousins included Library members William Beekman, James Beekman, Jr., John K. Beekman, and Abraham K. Beekman. She married Isaac Cox, a Philadelphia and New York City merchant, in 1780; they had three children (Duyckinck 185-186). She became a widow in 1787 (Williams 48-52).
