Thomas Cadle, a merchant, was born in 1764 in Gloucestershire, England. He came to New York just after the Revolutionary War in 1785 and started his business, dealing in cloth and dry goods. He was a member of the Society of the New York Hospital and owned land where St. Patrick's Cathedral now stands (Greene 2-3).

He was married to Sarah Fish, a cousin of Governor Hamilton Fish; they had ten children (Greene 2-3).

Cadle died in 1814 and is buried in St. Paul's Churchyard in New York.
