Peter Allair (3/12/1740 - 9/2/1820)

Also Known As: Peter Alexander Allaire
Reader
Borrowing activity from 8/20/1799 to 1/4/1806.
Peter Allair, a merchant, was born circa 1740 into a Huguenot family from New Rochelle (Lopez 516). Among the places he traded with were Guyana, Morocco, the Barbary Coast, Jamaica and Russia. He was based in London beginning in 1776, and shuttled between England and France while the two countries were at war (Lopez 516). He was a merchant in New York City in the 1780s.

Early in the American Revolution, Allaire acted as a spy for the British, shuttling between France and England (Platte). He became aquainted with and then fell out of favor with Benjamin Franklin, who suspected Allair of poisoning him, leading to Allair's imprisonment in the Bastille in 1780 (Lopez 520-522). After his release, he continued to live in France, until returning to America in 1784 (Platte; Lopez 515-526).

Peter Allair died in 1820 (Marcus 688).
