Andrew D. Barclay, a merchant, was born on August 30, 1773 (Moffat 107). In 1791 he took over the business of his father James and went into partnership with James McEvers in the auctioneering and commissions firm McEvers & Barclay (McBean 303). McEvers died in 1797, leaving Barclay in business alone. Barclay was a manager of the St. Andrew's Society from 1797-1799 (Morrison 191, 251).
Barclay's father was Andrew Barclay (Morrison 50). His brother-in-law was Library member Theophylact Bache (Morrison 50).
Barclay was one of twenty-four New York City stockbrokers and merchants that gathered outside 68 Wall Street on May 17, 1792, under a Buttonwood tree, and signed the Buttonwood Agreement that marked the founding of the New York Stock Exchange (Terrell).
Barclay died on March 31, 1801, in New Providence ("Register" 365).
