Elizabeth Ann Bailey, a teacher, founder of the American Sisters of Charity, and the first American-born Catholic saint, was born on August 28, 1774, probably in New York City (Spalding). Her family members were among the earliest colonial settlers of the New York area ("St. Elizabeth"). She married merchant William Seton in 1794, and during the early years of her marriage found a spiritual mentor in John Henry Hobart, an associate minister at Trinity Church (Connor). By 1801 Seton's business went bankrupt, they lost their home, and Seton began to experience symptoms of tuberculosis. The family relocated to Livorno, Italy for Seton's health, and when he died there in 1803 Bailey was widowed with five children. In Italy she was introduced to Roman Catholicism, and after returning to America in June 1804, she converted to Catholicism at Saint Peter's Church in Lower Manhattan on March 14, 1805. She taught in New York City to support her family, and in 1808 accepted an invitation to open a school for girls in Baltimore. In Baltimore in 1809, she and a group of women founded a religious order, later known as the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph, and moved to Emmitsburg, Maryland to provide free education to poor girls in the parish. Bailey took vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and service of the poor for the first time on July 19, 1813 ("St. Elizabeth"). The order took charge of Saint Joseph's Asylum, the first Catholic orphanage in the United States, in 1814, and started the New York City Orphan Asylum (Spalding). Bailey was among the founders and charter members of The Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children in 1797, and served as treasurer of the organization for seven years. She was canonized as America's first native-born saint in 1975.

Bailey's parents were Dr. Richard Bailey, a surgeon, and Catherine Charlton.

Bailey died on January 4, 1821, of tuberculosis near Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she is buried in the Basilica of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton ("St. Elizabeth").
